Best Sister in Law Ever...

Last night Jessica and I had a great "girls night in" together. Justin had a late night work event to attend, so Jess came over to keep me company. It was great. It's always fun to have Jess time. We are so different and yet think so alike on many subjects. Like eating for example- Jessica totally came up with a great idea for dinner- hors d ouevres! This is only my favorite kind of dinner that there ever was. We "made" (with the help of Giant's freezer section) some really great ones. There was spanikopida (aka "spankitopia"), cranberry and brie stuffed phyllo bites, summer sausage, delicious cheeses, some strawberries and a lovely wine to top it all off. We watched a "girl movie" and in general just had a great time hanging out and being girly together.

My favorite holiday foods

The season of holiday eating is upon us! Here are some of my favorites:

Thanksgiving

Sweet potatoes (even though I seem to be the only one who ever likes them)

Cranberries (the kind with the whole berries in it like Jessica makes)

My grandma's stuffing (especially the crunchy parts near the opening of the bird).

Gravy (the real stuff).

Pumpkin Pie

Christmas

Filet mignon (I like mine cooked medium well with a big dollop of horseradish and some A1 for dipping).

Mushrooms cooked in red wine, butter and garlic (to go with my filet of course!).

Amy's cheese snaps (yummy homemade cheese crackers with a bit of a kick to them).

Shrimp Cocktail

Pigs in blankets with Spike's BYB Hot Mustard (The kind that's so spicy it hurts your nose).

Amy's homemade yeast rolls (they look just like canned crescent rolls, but soo much better!).

Hot ham and cheese croissants (a delicious pairing of ham and sharp melty cheddar wrapped in flaky goodness).

Port wine cheese log! (Enough said! I really like the kind with slivered almonds on the outside).

Anything from Harry and David (if anyone would like to send me the "deluxe tower of treats" or anything else, I'll be happy to provide an address!).

Chocolate Dream Pie (a delightful chocolate mousse pie on a deep dark oreo cookie crust- the most important ingredient).

Easter

Delicious spiral ham with a sweet yummy glaze.

Butter Sauce Potatoes (Potatoes baked in the oven till crispy on the edges and tender in the middle in a "sauce" of melted butter).

Asparagus (cooked, but with a slight crisp left, and picked fresh from Giant or better yet, the Toopses back yard!).

I just realized I have no idea what dessert we usually eat on easter... I'm gonna say lemon meringue pie would be great.

New Friends!

Have you ever wanted a pet, but didn't want the responsibility of feeding, care taking and clean up?

I was having a really long afternoon until I found these guys. They're really friendly. I think they made my day!

Almost camping

This weekend, we planned a wonderful camping trip. We bought fun new camping supplies like a new flashlight, big sleeping bag and air mattress with it's own cool accessories.
We bought provisions for s'mores, hotdogs, and mindless snacking. It was going to be great.

We drove to Cunningham Falls Manor camping area, William Houck camping area, Greenbriar, and Little Bennet.

All to no avail, for alas our camping trip was not to be.
Apparently "first come first served" was not just a special invitation to us, and the whole world and their brothers decided to go camping on the same day. Oh well.
So we had a nice drive looking at the fall foliage anyhow.
We were so put out by the loss of our special plans that we had to eat hotdogs and make s'mores anyway-- only we were on the deck with the grill instead of in the wilderness with a roaring fire.
